A Just and Sustainable Internet for All

Issue 8: Finding Beauty in the Imperfect

As we put the individual articles of this issue together and stepped back, we realised that the theme of “finding beauty in the imperfect” can be viewed not only as a mindset, but also as a loose journey guiding us on how to build a just, sustainable and more humane web. The grouping of these articles reflects that, which we explain in more detail in the editors’ letter.

About Branch

Branch is an online magazine written by and for people who dream of a sustainable and just internet for all. It is edited and funded by the Green Web Foundation on behalf of the volunteer-run Climate Action.tech community.

We believe that the internet must serve our collective liberation and ecological sustainability. We want the internet to dismantle the power structures that delay climate action and for the internet itself to become a sustainable and positive force for climate justice.

Grid-aware by design

You might notice something slightly different about this website. It changes its design based on the quantity of fossil fuels on your grid when you view it.

The technical implementation of Branch seeks to reconnect the digital to the physical infrastructure that powers the internet. We’ve experimented with repurposing our digital design processes to consider and reflect these ecological needs, instead of optimising only for business and growth objectives such as more transactions, interactions and attention.
